How long should a garage door last
In the modern era we assume a lot of things should just work, but everything has an expiration date; including garage doors. In Wisconsin though, this can be a problem. We need a functioning well insulated garage door to stave off the cold and a working garage door opener to keep us out of the snow. How long then do we have before our garage door needs to be replaced?
The average garage door will last a minimum of 15 years but usually needs to be replaced or fixed after 30 years. Each garage door is different and it depends mostly on the door quality and usage when they need to be replaced. However, the spring of the garage door will probably need to be replaced before the whole door needs to be replaced. Each spring has about 10,000 cycles of opening and closing before it needs to be replaced. If the door is opened two times daily that equates to about 13-14 years where as four times daily is about 6-7 years, so depending on the usage you should have some time before a replacement is needed.
Other signs to look out for when wondering if you need to replace your garage door are:
- Cracks, chips, or otherwise damaged door
- Too many unsightly dents
- Is difficult to open and close
- The door sags
- Or just for visual appeal!
